History and character set the scene for a memorable stay at this charming Grade II-listed, three-bedroom cottage in the heart of pretty Winchelsea. Once believed to have been the former dairy to the neighbouring Mariteau House, the cottage is rich in character and offers a peaceful yet central retreat, ideal for couples, families and friends. It gives you easy access to the village shop, pub, bus stop and local museum (all within 350 metres). Winchelsea itself is a joy to explore, from picturesque streets to colourful gardens. The surrounding countryside is a treat for walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers. Head to Winchelsea Beach (1.5 miles) or explore the sweeping sands and dunes of Camber (7 miles). Charles Palmer Vineyards is a family-run vineyard located just 0.9 miles away. Day trips are easy to plan, with Rye (3 miles), Hastings Old Town (8 miles), Great Dixter House and Gardens (10.5 miles), and Bodiam Castle (12.5 miles).

Step inside and leave your coats and shoes in the welcoming hallway before heading through to the light and spacious lounge. This space features a wood burner, a comfortable sofa, a Smart TV and a smart speaker. Large windows and a door open straight onto the enclosed courtyard garden. Next door, the dining room centres around a generous wooden table, with board games, books and a snug reading nook for quieter moments. The well-equipped kitchen makes self-catering easy, and there’s a separate pantry for doing your laundry. A small snug area leads to two bedrooms – one king-size and one double – along with a family bathroom with a shower over the bath.

Outside, the property has an attractive garden. The walled courtyard is furnished with a bench, table and chairs so you can sip morning coffee or evening drinks in the fresh air.  On-road parking is subject to availability, with space to unload directly outside.

A very comfortable, spacious and well equipped holiday home in the midst of England's smallest town (less than 600 inhabitants - it is not a village, the locals insist!!). The central heating keeps the place warm. There was one cold evening during our stay, so we did what we do at home: light the fire in the living room. It has an efficient littlRead moree stove to make you feel cosy. When you open the front door, you look at one of the country's oldest churches. A walk through Winchelsea is a walk through English history.. Mariteau Cottage can only be recommended! If you want to spend a day without your car, the bus stop is some 50 metres away and the 100 bus route will take you to Rye (east) or Hastings (west). Saves you looking for a suitable car park and is certainly cheaper. The pub, The New Inn, is less than 100 metres and has has a lovely beer garden, but the food they served lacked quality. The beer, however, the beer was excellent. Hide
