This exceptional four-storey beach retreat pairs laid-back surf vibes with serious style. It’s 150 metres from the soft sands and rolling surf of Polzeath Beach – a true “surf in, surf out” haven. Newly built to frame the breathtaking ocean panorama, it offers a glamorous base for groups of families and friends keen to embrace Polzeath’s vibrant beach culture. Start mornings with a swim or a surf lesson, then wander to cool cafes and restaurants within half a mile – top breakfast spots are just 100 metres away, while lively pubs and coastal dining with sweeping views are slightly further (0.5 miles). The coast path (150 metres) leads you to Greenaway Beach (1 mile), Daymer Bay’s golden sand (1.5 miles), and the charming estuary village of Rock (2.5 miles), where a short ferry hop carries you to bustling Padstow (3.5 miles).

Step through the gated parking area and admire the cool surf mural before continuing into the spacious entrance hall. The ground floor has a handy utility room. The five fantastic bedrooms are spread across the first two floors, all of which boast super-king-size zip-and-link beds that convert to twins on request. All five bedrooms offer en-suite facilities, with two benefiting from sea-view balcony access. The second floor is the home’s social heart; this stunning split-level space has a well-appointed kitchen and breakfast bar for ten, a plush lounge with a wood burner, a huge dining table for twelve, and your very own cocktail bar complete with mood lighting. The top floor is pure indulgence – it has a cosy TV room with an Xbox, a glass walkway to a spectacular lookout framed by floor-to-ceiling glass, and a wow-factor sky hammock filled with cushions for comfy sunset watching. Throughout, enjoy thoughtful touches like underfloor heating and a Sonos sound system.

Outside, a large balcony on the top floor features an outdoor kitchen with an electric griddle BBQ, a fridge, and a sink so you can tuck into al fresco feasts. Front and back balconies on the second floor let you step out for fresh sea air at any moment. There are also three outdoor showers with wetsuit rails. You’ll also have undercover parking for two cars, plus a permit for one car to use in the public car park 0.5 miles away.

Cornwall never ceases to amaze, and Gwel Trelsa proved a new wonder, a universe removed from the holiday rentals of the 1980s when I first visited, when nylon sheets and a teasmaid were the height of modernism. Here was every luxury imaginable: super-king beds, fluffy towels, power showers, underfloor heating and a kitchen with all mod cons, all juRead morest a three-minute sprint from the Atlantic. Hide

In the spirit of confession, it would be wrong not to flag up the value-added virtues of our chosen holiday home for a control freak like me. I was so content in my beachside eyrie that I barely stirred from it. The teenagers came and went, renting boards from the surf shop and boogie boarding for thrills, while saving enough energy to renegotiate their curfew on a nightly basis. Like Lowry on vacation, in the early-morning light and made blurry by sea spray, stick-like figures were framed in the rectangle of our elevated glass fronted sitting room. Normally Id be busying myself trying to be everywhere at once. At Gwel Trelsa, I could put my feet up and direct the action from my large, super comfy blue velvet sofa extremely conducive to relaxing.
