Surrounded by countryside, South Creake is a typical North Norfolk village with the River Burn flowing beside the green, where there’s a children’s playground, tennis courts and a bowling club. The village’s medieval church hosts concerts each summer as part of the North Norfolk Music Festival, while neighbouring North Creake has a friendly pub/restaurant and, a little further on, a quaint pop-up café and range of independent stores sit close to the ruins of Creake Abbey (2.5 miles). Fakenham (6 miles) is a thriving market town home to the only National Hunt Racecourse in Norfolk. Alternatively, take a 4.5-mile drive to Burham Market to find upmarket boutiques, galleries, antique centres, and eateries. The Holkham Estate (8.5 miles) has sweeping sands, a stately home and nature reserve, while Wells-next-the-Sea has a characterful quayside where you’ll find fish and chip shops plus boat trip opportunities.

Located along the main coastal road through the village, this handsome holiday home has a brick and flint facade that’s synonymous with North Norfolk. Step through the front door into a charming sitting room, with a three-seater sofa and loveseat arranged before the wood burner and Smart TV. Stylish flooring, ceiling beams and a calm colour palette make this the setting for companionable evenings; choose a book from the shelves or open the bi-fold doors onto the rear garden, and you can unwind in true home-from-home comfort. Self-catering is fuss-free in the chic kitchen, which has all the essentials for preparing tasty meals as well as a coffee machine for your morning cuppa. Adjacent, the dining room is simply divine, with an exposed stone feature wall and generously sized dining suite. When it’s time to sleep, a curved, cottage-style staircase winds up from the sitting room to the first-floor landing. There’s a rope handrail on one side to aid your ascent; a chair by the landing window makes this a cosy spot to rest or read, and there’s hanging space for clothes too. Beyond, there’s a choice of two blissful bedrooms, each with a double bed and space for your belongings. A feature fireplace in one of these rooms evokes the period of the property. Completing the comfort for all, the bathroom is a chic space, with a Bluetooth speaker so you can listen to your favourite playlist as you freshen up.

Fully enclosed with willow fencing and with a gate giving direct access to the parking spaces immediately behind, the courtyard-style garden here is a beautiful space. Fire up the charcoal BBQ and enjoy al fresco dining on the patio. For more intimate moments, the gravelled area features sheltered seating complete with somewhere to rest your drinks, and lights for after-dark ambience. If you’re holidaying with four-legged friends, the dedicated dog shower will make light work of washing muddy paws at the end of each day’s adventures.

Sandpipers is a lovely cottage, tastefully decorated, furnished and equipped, to a high standard. With a responsive and helpful owner. The lounge suite and beds are very comfortable. The beds are medium firm and softly quilted on top, with a generous variety of comfy pillows. The 4.5 tog summer quilts were appreciated. On very warm nights, the bedrRead moreoom tower fans, while very welcome, were not up to the job. If you have any disability affecting your legs or back, or have balance problems, you may find the steep spiral staircase too much for you. The cottage is well-placed as a base for Wells beach - a 20 minute drive away (arrive before 11 am to be sure of a parking space on the beach front car park). And for other places of interest. But the nearest place to buy groceries or just a pint of milk is 15-20 minutes drive away. So I'd bring an initial stock of your essentials - or stop off at one of the supermarkets in Fakenham on your way there. First night dinner out? The Ostrich Inn is a 5 minute stroll away. Great pub food and some fancier options, generously portioned. Expect to pay north of 80 for three. The cottage and South Creeke are surrounded by the countryside. Peaceful at times. But at other times somewhat spoilt by the noise of the surprisingly high volume of traffic. Particularly in the morning and evening. Although less frequently, this does continue into the night. Being where it is, the traffic regularly includes heavy farm vehicles, which pass through at alarmingly high speed. If you're a heavy sleeper or accustomed to traffic noise, none of this may bother you. The cottage courtyard garden is lovely and for those with small children or dog lovers, is completely secure. But please be sure to bolt the gate after you arrive. To avoid the risk of toddlers or outsiders opening it without you knowing. Due solely to the busier than anticipated road front situation, we would not return. But other less noise-sensitive people will likely have a perfectly enjoyable stay. Hide

We had a fab time at Sandpiper Cottage. Everything we needed was there for a comfortable week's stay. The cottage is nicely situated for all the sights but in a sleepy village. There was an issue with the dishwasher while we were there but that was quickly and easily sorted by the owner Ian. We will definitely be back!
