A walk up to the ruins of historic Kendal Castle offers splendid views of the Lakeland fells and River Kent, while the Abbot Hall art gallery houses an outstanding collection. Visit Levens Hall (3.5 miles), with its splendid topiary gardens and the National Trust’s fine medieval Sizergh Castle (6 miles).
