Lincolnshire’s landscape is criss-crossed by airfields and reminders of the county’s role in aviation history – including Metheringham Airfield, once home to 106 Bomber Squadron, which flew its first WWII sortie in 1943. You’ll travel along the apron of the airfield as you approach this decommissioned barn, now sensitively converted into a beautiful holiday abode. An on-site visitor centre preserves the memory of the aircraft and people who served here, while a shop and café serve refreshments and souvenirs to satisfy all appetites. Step further back in time with a visit to the historic city of Lincoln (13 miles), where must-see attractions include a Gothic cathedral and, close by, a stunning castle which houses a Victorian prison and a copy of the Magna Carta. Closer to home, Woodhall Spa (6.5 miles) has peaceful, tree-lined streets and an elegant Edwardian atmosphere.

Keep a lookout for the resident barn owls; you may even be lucky enough to spot the Red Arrows training overhead, too.
