Tucked away in a peaceful spot on a former farm, this shepherd’s hut has been lovingly hand-built to create a blissful escape just for two – with a four-legged friend if you wish. You might even wake up to the sight of deer grazing – this is a romantic retreat like no other. Its peaceful setting (there is just one other glamping hut on the site 150m away) is wonderfully rural, yet only 4.5 miles from Wells, England’s smallest cathedral city. Visit on a market day (Wednesdays and Saturdays), explore the array of boutiques, pubs, cafes and restaurants, and don’t miss a visit to the moated Bishops Palace and the magnificent Wells Cathedral. The nature reserves of Westhay Moor, Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath are all within 10 miles, or you can climb the iconic Glastonbury Tor, 10.5 miles, to be rewarded with extraordinary, 360-degree views.
Carefully designed to include plenty of space and many of life’s luxuries, the hut is traditionally constructed with timber planking and a barrel-shaped, corrugated-metal roof, with four steps up to the front door. Inside, the beautiful open-plan space is fully insulated, double glazed and centrally heated. Among its many wonderful touches are mood lighting and a small wood burner – making the hut as cosy as can be in the cooler months. Cook delicious meals in the fitted kitchen area, which includes a ceramic hob, small fridge, compact microwave and ceramic sink with hot and cold running water. Sit down to eat at the table before relaxing for the evening – perhaps enjoying the TV or some music on the record player. At the far end of the room, a sleeping area with a double bed extends from wall to wall, its high-quality, memory-foam mattress specially selected to promote a good night’s sleep. There’s storage space below, and even room for cups of tea to sit in a niche beside the bed. At the opposite end of the hut, you can enjoy a refreshing shower in the en-suite, which also includes a proper, flushing WC.
The hut’s private outside space, surrounded by green fields and mature trees, is a delight. It includes a Scandinavian wood-fired hot tub, which has uninterrupted views towards Glastonbury Tor and offers the chance to soak in soothing bubbles as you relish the peace and quiet of this extraordinary location. Cook up some supper on the fire pit, using the Dutch oven provided, or grill a treat on the gas BBQ. Either way, you can dine at the patio table or lounge on the relaxed seating and, when you want to do nothing but stare up at the stars, head over to the deck chairs or the day bed and indulge. Another benefit of this inspiring holiday destination is a private parking space for one car.
