An ideal location for nature lovers, Bassenthwaite Lake is a popular osprey viewing station and is also home to Atlantic salmon, grasshopper warbler, curlew and geese. For families, the Lake District Wildlife Park on the northern edge of the lake makes for a fun-filled day out, as do the high ropes course, mountain biking trails and Segway adventures in nearby Whinlatter Forest Park, 8 miles away. Just 2 miles away, the pretty village of Embleton boasts a popular pub, spa hotel and restaurant, and children’s play area, with a well-respected 18-hole golf course just outside of the village itself. With a multitude of excellent walking in all directions, discover the gentle slopes of Sale Fell from the doorstep or head 8 miles east to take on the mighty Skiddaw.

Inside, this 17th-century cottage is brimming with original charm, through exposed ceiling beams, stone walls, a large inglenook fireplace with an open fire, and slate flooring now adorned with cosy rugs. Prepare tasty meals in the spacious kitchen, which is fitted with 2 ovens, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, table to seat six and underfloor heating for making that first cup of tea on chillier mornings. A handy utility room houses the washing machine and tumble dryer, and opens onto a downstairs WC and the side patio. A sunroom overlooking the garden and up to Sale Fell is a peaceful space in which to relax with a good book and make the most of some peace and quiet. Meanwhile, the cosy lounge with its exposed beam, inglenook fireplace with open fire, and Freeview TV is the perfect place to warm up after a long day outside. Steep wooden stairs lead up to a spacious bathroom with a separate shower. Continue climbing to reach three charming bedrooms: one twin with views towards the lake, one smaller twin overlooking the games barn, and one king-size with an en-suite shower room and views up to Sale Fell.

Outside, the garden wraps around three sides of the cottage and features a pond and stream, offering plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sunshine. Dine alfresco in one of the two patio areas equipped with out door seating and BBQ or head into the games barn for a spot of snooker , table football or table tennis. A separate stone building accommodates the fourth bedroom: a king-size with en-suite shower room - perfect for couples. A large gravel driveway provides parking for up to four cars.

Please note the property is accessed by 8 stone steps from the parking area to the front door and both house and garden are multi-level, so this cottage may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.

Wonderful cottage with separate annex bedroom & shower and games room. Loved it all in the fabulous northern Lakes. Not the cottages fault but the only problem was keeping the grandchildren happy if they are not good walkers. The coast was an option only 30 mins drive away but would have liked more for them to do. However, the games room was ideal Read morefor everyone of our party of 7 except for the youngest child. Nice gardens if weather permits (which it didn't really) and was notified of wasp nest which was dealt with the same day. All the bedrooms were immaculate and clean with ours having en suite. Shower cubicle in en suite a bit 'tight' but always good flow and always hot water. Downstairs a traditional cottage lounge was a bit 'dark' but that;s what you get with a 300 year old cottage and it had loads of character. Kitchen large, even for all 7 of us and well equipped generally. With 7 of us perhaps a bigger fridge/freezer would have been even better. Nice to have a downstairs toilet as the stairs to bedrooms very steep. Family bathroom looked fabulous although we used the en suite. I did google the location before we left which is advisable as the cottage is not easy to find, as it's down a track. Must look for 'The Riggs' sign at side of lane to know where to go. Parking was easy for our 2 cars. The cottage was a bit of a height problem for my 6ft 5ins son but, again, it;s a 300 year old cottage so that's what to expect. All in all though, a lovely cottage and lovely country position. Would love to revisit but perhaps when grandchildren are a bit older. Hide

This cottage itself is brilliant, the games room is fantastic and the setting is magnificent. There is plenty of room, very comfortable and just a dream place at the edge of the Lake District. The main negative issue is the stairs which have quite high steps, are of polished wood with no visibility/ anti slip edges, all of which may make it probabRead morely not suitable for elderly and young children. (One of our party slipped and fell down the stairs during our stay, injuring himself badly. Despite our comments I would recommend the cottage but advise those with young children and elderly relatives to be aware of the stairs issue. Hide

This is a really pretty cottage with great accessibility to the Lake District National Park. A comfortable, cosy cottage with a lovely games barn on a rainy day. The cottage retains its quaint quality even though it comes with all mod cons.

Riggs cottage was truelfy lovely. Unlike other cottages we have stayed at, therre was enough comfortable seeting for everyone (three large couches), plentiful hot water and lots of kitchen/dinning equipment. The games room was amazing. One of the best places we have stayed - and I would highly recomend it. Holidaycottages.co.uk, however, was Read morea real let down. Unlike other companies we have booked thorugh, they could not give additional information about what was in the cottage. It was difficult to find out if there was a cafetier (when I called to ask they simply read what was listed on their website! I could - and had - read that myself) They also put in genaric arrival and departure times, simply stating "unless otherwise specified" making it hard to plan. So Riggs cottage - YES (deffinitly!), holidaycottages.co.uk - NO Hide

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at Riggs Cottage, it was just the two of us. If I was taking my family an additional TV would be useful. The kitchen was well stocked, and it was nice things like dishwasher tablets were provided.
