This charmingly quirky property, situated in Irsha Street in the historic fishing village of Appledore, is ideally placed for a family or friends sharing to explore the beautiful North Devon coast. The cottage sleeps four guests and is not far from the bustling quayside, where the Rivers Taw and Torridge meet. Take a stroll around Appledore’s narrow, winding streets lined with painted houses and visit the North Devon Maritime Museum to discover the village’s rich heritage. Buy local produce, art and crafts from a range of independent shops, along with fresh-caught fish and seafood for supper. Northam Burrows Country Park, just 1 mile distant, is rich in wildlife and offers beautiful estuary views, while the vast expanse of golden sand at Westward Ho! Beach is within 3 miles. For all-round family fun, head to the Big Sheep amusement farm park to meet the animals and ride the rollercoaster.

From the cottage front door, enter a small hallway, where you’ll find the sitting room, filled with light from a large window. Settle down on the comfortable four-seater sofa to watch TV or plan tomorrow’s adventures. The bright dining room also has a large window, and houses a table and bench seating, along with a lovely period ornamental fireplace. Take two steps up to the sleek, compact kitchen, complete with a traditional dresser. A door from the kitchen opens onto a courtyard and outbuilding utility area. Please be aware that the age of this well-preserved cottage means certain doorways have limited headroom and there are steep stairs to the first floor. Here, a further three steps bring you to the spacious family bathroom, with another pretty, ornamental fireplace. There are two cosy bedrooms, both with lovely beams. One features a super-king-size zip-and-link which can be made up as a twin, a chest of drawers and a further ornamental fireplace. The other is a double, in a charming Victorian-style bedstead.

Outside, a secluded courtyard has outdoor furniture and an outbuilding with a WC and utility area.

This is our third stay at Shipwrights and we're already looking forward to coming back. The cottage is beautifully decorated and well equipped. The location is perfect - close to a local car park but a very short stroll to the sea front and local shops. The small outbuilding is perfect for drying wetsuits and having a washing machine is key for us Read morewith two small children. It does have some steep steps and low ceilings (we very much appreciated the helpful padding for those of us that sometimes forget to duck!) so probably not suitable for those with severe mobility issues. It is dog friendly so again might not be suitable if you have allergies, otherwise we'd definitely recommend. Hide

We spent a lovely few days in this beautifully renovated cottage. It was well equipped, very comfortable and warm for a chilly November stay. The cottage was full of character with a few low doors and sloping floors adding to its character. It was lovely to be back in Appledore with a new generation and to see the changes and welcome new additions Read moreto the village, including the Coffee Cabin (good coffee and breakfasts) and The Bakery. Such a lovely cottage we've already stayed there twice. Very conveniently located for a local car park and beautifully furnished throughout. Well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and a powerful shower. The bath is quite short by design, I found it very comfortable but you might find it a bit short if you're very tall. There are some low doorwRead moreays and the stairs are quite steep but it's all in keeping with the character of the cottage. I'm sure we'll be back again. Hide
