It’s hard to imagine a better location than this superb property on the waterfront in Polruan. Thoughtfully designed to comfortably accommodate large groups, and pet-friendly, too, it’s the perfect place for a dream holiday, creating unique memories with family or friends. Explore the winding, hilly streets of the quaint fishing village, where you’ll find a convenience store, a couple of friendly cafes and two pubs serving food. Stride out on the South West Coast Path, heading for the secluded beach at Lantic Bay (2 miles), or take the short ferry ride across the estuary to Fowey. This chic coastal resort boasts a plethora of independent boutiques and galleries, and a choice of excellent places to eat and drink. Heading further afield, the world-class attractions of Charlestown Harbour, the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan are all within 12.5 miles.

Access this stunning house via original steep slate steps and enter the gorgeous open-plan living space, a huge room with a half wall dividing the kitchen/diner from the lounge area, with a wood burner set at its end so that both rooms get the benefit of its cheery warmth in cooler months. The whole area is full of light, and decorated in a timeless mix of white-painted planks, limewashed floorboards and natural timber. The chef of the holiday will have the time of their lives creating delicious meals in the kitchen, aided by a range-style cooker, American-style fridge/freezer, microwave and even an ice maker. Everyone has room to gather at the long dining table, and after supper there are options for relaxing either together or apart. You could simply stroll into the lounge and snuggle on the soft seating, with entertainment provided by the Smart TV. Alternatively, head to the timber-framed conservatory, where you can sit back and watch the river craft passing by, go to the games room around the corner, in which there’s a bespoke bar area and table tennis, or retreat to the snug, where you can tuck yourself away with a good book. Completing the ground floor are a utility room and a WC. Take the stairs to the first floor, admiring the views as you ascend, to find four stylish and tranquil bedrooms, all with charming traditional-style metal beds and ample storage. The super-king-size bedroom is phenomenal, with floor-to-ceiling glazing that offers views across the water and access to a small balcony, plus an en-suite bathroom with a free-standing, roll-top bath, separate shower and classically beautiful fittings. The king-size bedroom has an en-suite shower room and yet more glorious sea views. The other two bedrooms, a double and a twin, share a handsome family bathroom.

Stepping out from the conservatory (and down two steps), the fabulous outside space comprises a huge patio with seating as well as a Mediterranean-inspired veranda, where luscious foliage climbs up a pergola to surround the outdoor table – perfect for fresh-air dining while you watch the boats float past. Via steep steps, you can access the small beach below when the tide is out, and there is also a mooring. There’s one parking space provided for a medium-sized car (it’s not possible to drive right up to the house, but there is a nearby drop-off point for unloading). Larger or additional vehicles can be parked in the public car park 300 metres away.

What an amazing pace to stay. Right on the water and incredible views. Eating out on the deck was a real privilege. Being able to SUP and swim from the house was fantastic. Polruan was beautiful and so quiet with Fowey a super quick ferry away which runs until late in the evening. The house is so well equipped. Loved the stay.

Our family of eight adults plus dog had a very good stay at Waterside House in early September. The waterfront location provides a great view of the harbour and the large outdoor seating area captures a surprising amount of the afternoon sun. The steps down to the water bring you directly to a marked out swim zone, which we used on numerous occasioRead morens. The house interior is stunning and the level of equipment surpassed any holiday house we have stayed in previously (with the exception of the faulty fridge). The property was easily large enough for our group not to feel on top of each other and the outside space was perfectly secure for our cocker spaniel. Polruan is quieter than its neighbour Fowey, which we appreciated. The choices for eating and drinking were correspondingly limited, but the larger town is easily accessible by ferry. We hired our own boat for the week (moored nearby on the Town Quay) which made trips across more fun and interesting and offered an additional dimension for daytime activities on the river. The Southwest Coast Path is very accessible, and there is a bus stop yards away to take you to Looe and Polperro. The table tennis table offered additional entertainment in poor weather. We had a couple of reasons to contact the owner, who was very polite and responsive. The one downside was access. The property is approached via over 30 steep and slightly uneven steps, which can be slippery in wet weather, and the walk to and from the car involves a steep gradient even if you use the allocated parking space provided.
