A beautiful retreat which enjoys a prime location in the idyllic village of Greystoke. Greystoke boasts a heated outdoor pool (May - September), a lively pub plus a medieval castle with bars, live events and an abundance of walking rails for you and your four-legged companions. Make your way to Ullswater (6 miles), the second largest lake in England, to take a walk around its banks, visiting the Aira Force Waterfall (9 miles) and the pretty village of Pooley Bridge (6 miles). The twin fells of Great Mell (6 miles) and Little Mell (6.5 miles) can be hiked close to here, as can Blencathra (10 miles) for incredible views out to the Solway Firth and across The Pennines. In between excursions, embrace rest days and visit Penrith (5 miles). Penrith is a charming market town with cobbled streets, an ancient castle, a selection of independent businesses and plenty of shops and eateries. From here, take the train to Carlisle (17.5 miles), an endearing city with a castle and cathedral.

Located on a quiet village street, this mid-terraced stone cottage opens into a snug yet spacious two-storey holiday home. Stone-flagged flooring, wooden beams and exposed brickwork add to the traditional appeal of the place, particularly in the dining room that greets you on arrival. Two steps lead from here up to a bright, well-equipped kitchen for all your mealtime requirements. Opposite the dining room, a lovely lounge invites restful times with soft seating, a Smart TV and a wood burner-effect electric fire to keep things warm. After a cosy night in here, retire to bedrooms on the first floor. A double and a spacious twin room sit opposite one another, with a family bathroom completing the property’s offering.

Check in was very easy (key outside in keysafe). Bottle of fizz, bread, butter & milk was waiting for our arrival. We stayed here for 3 nights and found it ideally located. The village pub (The Boot & Shoe Inn) is dog friendly and does lovely food (gets busy at weekends so pre book a table if you wish to eat there). The cottage itself is very coRead moresy and well equipped with everything you need. The beds are really comfy with plenty of extra pillows and bedding if needed. Some issues we experienced were that the tv in the lounge had no tv channels due to poor aerial signal but it does have Netflix via the wifi. The shower was quite small and it wasnt a power shower, also there was an issue with hot water, there was a note left explaning how to overcome this but it still caused some inconvenience. The heating in the cottage is by way of wall mounted electric heaters, they took abit of sussing out how to operate but once working they did a great job of warming up the cottage. The mentioned issues aside, overall we enjoyed our stay. Hide

Another lovely stay, contrary to past reviews, we cannot smell damp at all. This is our third stay and cannot fault the hosts efforts to accommodate and welcome their guests. A huge thank you

The cottage is spacious, well equipped and in an excellent location (very close to the local pub, up the road from the village shop and opposite the village green). If you stay in summer, theres also an outdoor pool which offers some sessions to the public. The whole area is dog walking heaven! Our host provided a generous welcome pack complete witRead moreh bread, butter, bacon, beer and Prosecco. Sadly, the cottage smelt of damp downstairs. Not overpoweringly so, but definitely there and not pleasant. Also, the bedsheets are not pure cotton so if that matters to you, you may wish to bring your own bedding. Those two things aside, it was a very good stay. "Reply from holidaycottages.co.uk - Thank you, Kaley, for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. Were delighted you enjoyed the location, the welcome pack, and all the nearby amenities, it really is a lovely area for walks and relaxing breaks. Were sorry to hear you noticed a damp smell downstairs and appreciate you mentioning it, the owner is aware of your feedback and is looking into it to make sure its resolved. The owner did also want to reassure you that the bed sheets are 100% cotton, and is sorry to hear you felt they were not up to standard. Were so glad you had an overall good stay and hope we can welcome you and your dog back again soon!" Hide

Squirrel Cottage was a lovely comfortable base for us to explore the more northern areas of the lakes, and we had a lovely stay. Its relatively small but very cozy and perfect for the three of us and a fluffy one. Weve visited the lakes for many years and stayed in various cottages and lodges but this has to be the most well equipped accommodatioRead moren weve ever stayed in, right down to having a step for our little girl to reach the sink, and a bean bag for her to relax on after busy days out! We arrived late and hadnt had chance to get the basics in so when we were greeted with thoughtful items such as Prosecco, eggs, bacon, bread, milk & biscuits we were very grateful. Things like kitchen foil, washing up liquid and shampoo arent usually provided in self catering accommodation so these were pleasant surprises too. Parking was sometimes a problem getting a space on the road in front of the cottage but the village had other places to park so wasnt too much of an issue. Lots of really nice places to eat nearby; The Sun, Pooley Bridge Inn and Ullswater Inn. Im aware the owners are new to holiday rentals but would be good to get a visitor book for future visitors to leave ideas for days out, places to eat, etc weve always enjoyed reading them in places weve stayed before and find them extremely useful. Lovely castle right on the doorstep too so be sure to visit Greystoke castle before you leave. Really enjoyed our stay :-) Hide

What a lovely cottage, clean and fresh. The atmosphere was warm and cosy and we really appreciated the welcome treats that had been left for us. The owners have put thought and care into Squirrel cottage and the reward is a first class holiday home with lots of homely comforts. We will definitely stay again.
