This delightful, family-friendly country cottage nestled in Clifford in the heart of the Wye Valley offers the ultimate rural retreat, perfect for anyone craving an escape to the countryside. The sleepy hamlet of Clifford is set on the banks of the River Wye on the Welsh border, just 2.5 miles from the bustling town of Hay-on-Wye which is renowned for its famous new and second-hand bookshops, quaint cafes and delightful restaurants. A short stroll from the house is the River Wye, a riverside nature reserve, the ruins of the Norman Motte, and Baily Clifford Castle. Walkers can join the Wye Valley Walk and head towards Hay-on-Wye or while away a fine afternoon skimming stones and watching canoeists paddle the gentle rapids of the river beach. The Warren, a delightful riverside meadow, is just over 3 miles away. The Wye Valley and Offa’s Dyke trails pass through Hay-on-Wye, perfect for keen walkers, with the landscapes of the Brecon Beacons National Park just 2.5 miles away offering trails leading to Hay Bluff and Twmpa.

The beautifully high ceiling and wonderful flagstone floor in the hallway set the charming rustic ambience of this whole cottage, echoed in both the quaint snug and cosy lounge which both feature roaring wood burners that set the scene for pure relaxation. The snug room also features a Pioneer record player, piano and guitar for guests to enjoy along with a small workplace. The authentic character continues in the kitchen which boasts a contemporary country cottage style decor that’ll capture your imagination. The adjoining dining in the extension is both bright and spacious space with a 12-seater dining table that takes centre stage and is perfect for hosting. There’s a handy utility room on the ground floor, as well as a refreshing family shower room which combines chic style with traditional sophistication. For boots and coats, a spacious boot room is available with ample storage and a bench, along with an external entrance which is perfect for dogs returning from muddy walks. Across the first and second floor, you’ll find four bedrooms, two king-size, one double and one twin, lovingly restored to maximise charming period features including exposed beams and ornamental fireplaces. There’s also a family bathroom on the first floor that shares the same charm and character as the rest of the cottage.

From sunrise to sunset, the large, enclosed lawn with uninterrupted views across the countryside provides the perfect spot for children to let off some steam, whilst the separate enclosed, cobbled courtyard is ideal for a spot of al fresco dining. Outside, you’ll also find private parking for two cars.

We had a wonderful week. Lovely house, well situated close to Hay, comfortable and well equipped everywhere, especially the kitchen. View of the Brecon Beacons from the front door. Lovely garden and courtyard, lambs in the field, river only 250 yards away - idyllic. Thoroughly recommended.

We had a great time time in the cottage over the Easter weekend. Great space for two families to share. Convenient location for getting into Hay on Wye and surrounds. Good value for money.
