Gather friends, family and four-pawed pals for a break at this beautiful Grade II-listed property. Dating from the 1600s, the converted country house hotel is a great base for adventures amid the Quantock Hills an area of outstanding natural beauty. The vibrant village of Nether Stowey, which has welcoming pubs and local shops, is 1.5 miles from the doorstep. Once home to poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, whose cottage is now owned by the National Trust, the village is the starting point for the 51-mile Coleridge Way which leads to Lynmouth on the northern edge of Exmoor. Postcard-pretty villages and heritage attractions punctuate this protected area, with must-see sites including fossil-hunting on Kilve Beach (4 miles), Watchet with its harbour (9 miles), and Dunster Castle (14.5 miles). Catch a train from Bishops Lydeard (9.5 miles) along the historic steam railway line to the seaside resort Minehead, or you could follow one of the many coastal paths which offer dramatic cliff-top walks.

Inside a traditionally warm welcome awaits as the light and airy entrance hall leads into a lounge with a choice of sofas, a huge Smart TV, and the original hotel bar – perfect for functions or drinks with friends. Head in another direction from the hall and into the dining room which can comfortably seat 17; the updated kitchen has all the appliances you’ll need to cater for a large party and there is plenty of storage space in the larder, but for total time off you can pre-book professional catering directly with the owners. Head upstairs to choose from seven of the nine en-suite bedrooms. The master bedroom has a beautiful four-poster bed with an ensuite bathroom with a separate bath and shower and a sofa bed sleeping a further 2 guests. A king-size room also has an en-suite bathroom with a separate bath and shower and a sofa bed sleeping a further guest comfortably. There are a further four double bedrooms, one single, all with en-suite shower rooms.  A further two bedrooms, double and twin, each have en-suite shower rooms and are located on the ground floor, with their own external access. All nine bedrooms here have their own Smart TV and there are two separate WCs on the ground floor.

This remarkable holiday home has ample parking to the front, while at the rear a few steps lead to a private enclosed garden with four access gates, outside seating, and a charcoal BBQ. Beyond, a few steps lead to a private outdoor unheated swimming pool which is open from June to the end of October, plus a hot tub and five-person sauna for year-round chill-out sessions. A detached holiday cottage is situated to the side of this main residence and guests of both share the use of a games barn and a 4.5-acre lawned garden surrounded by woodland. Wander to the top of the shared garden for far-reaching views over the surrounding countryside and across the Bristol Channel to the Welsh coast. If you’d like to stay here with a larger group, the smaller property sleeps a further 8+2 guests.

From 1 September 2026, a king-size bedroom and ensuite shower room will be removed from the property reducing the bedrooms from 9 to 8 and en-suite shower rooms from 10 to 9. Fantastic, warm and comfortable accommodation for our large family group (ages from 3-70). It was lovely to have all bedrooms en-suite. The games room, jaccuzzi and sauna were very popular and enjoyed by all of us. Very easy access and parking was a bonus.

A party of 13 adults and 2 dogs who all enjoyed their stay at The Castle of Comfort; a very quirky house that was more like staying in a hotel but having sole use. Parking is plentiful, there is much to see and do in the area - we would recommend, without reservation.

Thank you so much for your magnificent house. Stayed 8th-15th August 2025, 17 family members and our dog Bailie to celebrate my wifes 60th Birthday. The house was brilliant, bar area and seating was perfect for chats, games and get togethers. Dinning room easily sat us all with an amazing kitchen fully equipped for all cooking needs, we brought twoRead more air flyers and a blender which made it easier. Fully stocked plates etc. glasses, cuttlery etc. so we had amazing meals, all sat together as a family which was, as we wanted it to be. All bedrooms were amazing, with on-suites and fitted everybodys needs. Two bedrooms are out of the back door but these were perfect as they were on ground level for anyone, as we had with vision and mobility issues. And then the pool, although not heated was very warm, with the hot tub and sauna which was perfect and made it hard to leave the house to venture out and finally leave on the last day. The hill at the back leading up to the pergola with the amazing views was such a relaxing addition and the games room was also great. All together we had an amazing time, fully exceeding all expectations, we fully recommend this house as a holiday to make memories as we all have done. Hope to come back regards and thanks, John and Debbie. Hide
