Derwent Valley – where the Derbyshire lowlands meet the more rugged landscape of the Peak District – is a breath-taking base for walkers, cyclists, wildlife watchers and history buffs. Set amid stunning countryside, it has all-year interest and is home to Derwent Valley Mills, a World Heritage Site snaking 15 miles along the river. Among the highlights here is Cromford Mill (1 mile) – take a tour to learn how the modern factory system began here and a 5 minute walk to woodland walks and to Cromford canal, incredible for dog walking . Make time to visit the neighbouring towns of Matlock and Matlock Bath (2 miles) during your holiday: occupying a beautiful position in a stunning limestone valley, both offer a wealth of family-friendly attractions. Travel the Dale Road between the two and cable cars will transport you to the Heights of Abraham hilltop park. Further on, historic Haddon Hall sits between Matlock and Bakewell (13 miles). Just 5 miles from your doorstep in the opposite direction, Crich Tramway Village offers trips back in time with rides, a period village scene, a woodland walk and a sculpture trail. Also nearby is Chatsworth just 11 miles.
Located in the historic mill village of Lea Bridge – home for more than 200 years to world-leading knitwear manufacturer John Smedley – this pretty stone cottage offers a typically warm welcome. Set back from the road by a grassy front garden, it occupies a peaceful spot on the edge of the village. Follow the path to the rear and you’ll enter the property through a conservatory with tiled flooring, a TV and a sofa – a perfect place to chill out while children or dogs play in the garden. Move onwards through a handy utility space and you’ll find a ground-floor shower room. Beyond there’s a sleek kitchen with a walk-in pantry and all the amenities of home, including an air fryer and dishwasher. The living room offers a wood burner, perfect for cosy evenings by the fire after a day’s exploring. The large windows offer light and views of the garden and beautiful spaces outside. The other side of the kitchen offers a dining room, perfect for celebrations and a feature fireplace creates ambiance and offers some original features. The dining room leads to the hallway, and upstairs, offers three lovely fresh bedrooms, with touches of colour and warmth added by woodland and countryside curtains and furnishings. There are two double bedrooms, the larger with a smart TV and a single bed at the back of the cottage. The family bathroom offers a corner jacuzzi bath, with WC and hand basin.
With a wooded valley backdrop, the back garden here is full of seasonal interest. Tree-lined, lawned and fully enclosed, it has outdoor furniture and a choice of seating areas – fabulous for all the family. The garden has open space to the back and side of the property, creating a really immersive countryside feel and a sense of peace.
