Escape to this charming retreat in the attractive, tranquil village of Bolam in County Durham with access to peaceful dog walks, walking and cycling trails from the doorstep. There is a pub in the village, a nearby shop (4 miles), and larger supermarkets and takeaways a little further away (5 miles). Explore nearby historic Raby Castle, with its stunning Deer Park and beautiful walled gardens (8 miles) and stop by the cafe for lunch. Head to the bustling town of Barnard Castle for independent shops, bars and restaurants, and visit the medieval fortress. Discover the stunning Bowes Museum with art, fashion and design collections to admire, and events for all ages throughout the year. Head to Durham Cathedral (26 miles) and enjoy a peaceful riverside stroll. Closer to home in Bishop Auckland is Bishops Palace – the former residence of the Bishops of Durham, and home of the sensational Kynren show.

This well-appointed, semi-detached former byre has been lovingly finished and stylishly furnished with original stone wall features and plenty of thoughtful touches to help you have a relaxing and enjoyable stay. From the front door, head into the welcoming lounge with wood flooring and exposed beams where you can relax on comfortable seating arranged around the wood burner-style electric fire and feature stone fireplace. There are books to browse during your stay, a Smart TV, DVD player and DAB radio for your entertainment, and a desk in the corner in case you want to use your laptop. Three steps lead to the modern, open-plan kitchen/diner with high ceilings and exposed beams adding to the sense of space. The family cook will have everything they need to create delicious meals and drinks with quality appliances including an electric hob and oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, and a Tassimo coffee machine. There is also an electric Aga, but since this is a lovely, warm property with underfloor heating, the Aga is only on during the extremes of winter (although it can be turned on upon prior request). With a Freeview TV on the wall in the dining area, you can listen to music whilst you prepare your meal or while you sit at the table for sociable mealtimes. French doors lead from the kitchen to the rear patio area. Just off the kitchen, there is a utility area with a washing machine and a shower room with a shower cubicle and WC. On the first floor, you will find both bedrooms; one with a king-size zip-and-link bed (which can be made up as twins on request), and a double bedroom. The family bathroom completes the accommodation with a shower over the bath and WC.

Outside at the front, there is a seating area with garden furniture and a BBQ where you can sit with a drink and listen to the local birdsong and dine alfresco in the warmer months. The lawned area is set within the circular gravel driveway. The garden can be enclosed using the gates on either side to allow your dogs to explore. At the rear, there is a patio area with a bench seat. Guests have access to an EV car charger (charges apply) and there is space for three cars on the driveway.

Excellent - very well equipped and presented cottage in a quiet location yet was also close to main routes. Warm welcome from hosts, and a very well put together welcome hamper. Everything we would have wanted was found, particularly in the kitchen. For us it was a great place to base ourselves whilst working in the area, but we can also see iRead moret would be great as a holiday base Hide

This is a wonderful cottage with fabulous history. The surrounding area was delightful, steeped in history. The standard of finish within the cottage was amazing. It felt like a home from home, only better!
