This cottage was a wonderful find. So comfortable, well equipped and relaxing. The games room and garden were perfect for the grandsons, aged between 2 and 13. The garden and bbq area were so relaxing and we had a few evenings where we just sat around talking and watching the boys play. The house, well, each room was a wow!! We stayed at Hawthorn House in Tomintoul and overall had a mixed experience. The location is excellent, especially if you have a car, as it gives easy access to a number of nearby towns and cities. The region itself is beautiful, right next to the Cairngorms National Park and close to several distilleries, which made it a great base for explorinRead moreg. The house is also well equipped, with good appliances, and the game room is a really nice addition. However, the comfort was affected by the heating situation. Having to pay extra for heat was disappointing, and without it the house was often cold, particularly in the downstairs bedroom. The wood provided also did not burn properly, so it did not help much with warming the space. The water usage limitation also felt a bit unusual compared to other places we have stayed. Overall, while the location and facilities were strong, the heating and a few practical limitations made the stay less comfortable than expected. Hide

This house is exceptional in every respect. We travel around the UK a lot with our dogs and have a number of requirements from a property as a result of this. The house is furnished to a very high standard with every possible comfort. We often find that owners use cheap, uncomfortable settees, but not here. The settees and chairs in the living rRead moreoom were leather, high backed and so comfortable. The whole house had an air of quiet comfort and it felt so welcoming. It is equipped better than anywhere else we have ever stayed. We normally travel with loads of items that properties don't seem to have....normally kitchen equipment....and we didn't need to use a single item we brought! There is a huge garden which is lovely and well kept. We visited with our dogs and 2 friends and had the best time there. The whole place has been very thoughtfully designed and we will definitely be back. Can't recommend highly enough. Hide

A little late posting as we stayed October half term. Arrived in the evening to a very warm cosy house and a welcome basket which after a long journey was appreciated. Children had a fab time in the games room. House was clean and more than enough space for 8 of us. Would recommend. Good communication with host.
