This country bungalow is located just 1 mile from the market town of Bailieborough, and offers a peaceful retreat for large families and groups of friends with the dog in tow. Bailieborough is one of Ireland’s highest towns, nestled amongst the mountains of East Cavan. There are fantastic walking opportunities in the area, including to the summit of Lough an Leagh (4.5 miles), which overlooks the town and provides breathtaking views across an impressive 14 counties. The town is a popular base for anglers, with good coarse and pike fishing available in the surrounding lakes. Just outside the town is the magnificent Castle Lake (3 miles) which, as well as being a much-loved fishing spot, is also a lovely place for a tranquil, waterside stroll or a picnic on a summer’s day.

The detached bungalow is decorated in a country-cottage style, with traditional furniture and pretty, soft furnishings. After a long country walk, return to the cosy cottage to unwind in the welcoming lounge, where you’ll find a plump sofa to sink into and a warming wood burner to toast your toes as you watch the TV/DVD, or read a book. The stylish kitchen/diner has everything you need to whip up tasty feasts for the group, to enjoy together around the wooden dining table. The property has two delightful double bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room. There’s also a cosy twin bedroom, with a family bathroom completing this rural bolthole.

Outside, a haven of peace and tranquillity awaits in the large, partially enclosed garden, which has a patio area and BBQ for al fresco dining. The garden enjoys far-reaching rural views and there is also a pretty stream running through it (children should be supervised at all times).

As the only cottage listed in this area we return each year. There is only one other, more modern house (and cheaper!) in Cavan but it is over at Belturbet so not the area we want (fishing, seeing friends). The cottage is warm and comfortable. Its location is good, quiet, near a town with all amenities and within reach of sites like Newgrange and BRead moreoyne valley. Even lively Westport is just 2 hours away. Hide
