Property code: OC-6FR

Situated just a stone’s throw from the beach and the much-loved Southwold High Street, with glorious views over the marshes towards the harbour, sits this utterly superb Grade II listed holiday home which sleeps 8.  Salt Works Cottage has been lovingly refurbished to a very high standard and is so luxurious that you won’t ever want to leave.

Built in 1760, this delightful cottage was once the offices and home of the manager of the famous Southwold Salt Works. Back in those days, a windmill transferred salt water from the marshes into giant saltpans which were heated with fires to evaporate the water and make slabs of salt.

Enter the property through a wooden gate into a private entry courtyard which leads through to your own sunny and secluded patio/dining area.  On entering the cottage, be wowed by the stunning décor throughout. It is deceptively spacious and bright too. Every little thing has been thought of by the owners to make their guests feel totally at home and relaxed.  We know that you will just adore this hidden gem in Southwold.

Set across two floors, there is a large open plan handmade kitchen/dining room which boasts a deliciously squidgy sofa and a log burner for those cooler evenings, as well as a large island for you to gather around after an exhausting day on the beach with a glass of something chilled whilst waiting for supper to be cooked up.  A striking room featuring a large flint and brick wall, this really is the hub of the house! The kitchen is well equipped with everything you will need during your stay, there is even a Nespresso coffee machine and of course plenty of storage for all the groceries.  Large French doors open out onto the patio area where there is room for everyone.  Enjoy early morning coffee and croissants in the sunshine, catch up around the barbecue after a busy day exploring the beautiful heritage coast or just sit peacefully listening to the gulls.  The property is within walking distance of two local supermarkets, a greengrocer and the Two Magpies Bakery, as well as fresh fish from the seafood stalls in the harbour.  With an abundance of restaurants and pubs not to mention Sole Bay fish and chips there is plenty to choose from if you fancy a ‘night off’.

With two sitting rooms, both with log burners and stunning views of the sunset, be spoilt for choice. The main sitting room boasts two large leather sofas, perfect for chilling with a movie.  The smaller room lends itself to relaxing with a glass of wine and a good book or maybe a board game.

The sumptuous accommodation includes a master bedroom with ensuite shower room. This room enjoys wonderful views both across the marshes and down Ferry Road itself. The cottage also provides a twin bedroom (ideal for children) and two further doubles.  These rooms share a family bathroom with shower and bath, as well as a further shower room downstairs. All rooms are tastefully furnished with an air of calm and a nod to the coast.

Why we love this property: A fabulous period coastal home with stunning interiors, full of character with exposed beams and traditional latch doors, so close to the beach you can smell the sea air and listen to the waves lying in bed at night.

Notes:

Salt Works Cottage is situated adjacent to Southwold Denes which stretch from Gun Hill to the harbour's mouth and act as a vital sea defence for the town. Suffolk Coasts and Heaths are working with several agencies to maintain and enhance the area. And a very important area it is. It is the home of skylarks and little terns (please be careful not to disturb the nests) and the habitat of sea holly, sea pea and bird's foot trefoil to name a few. Our properties here enjoy the sunrise over the sea and stunning sunsets over the marshes.
