Borough House is a historic and fascinating property right in the heart of Whitby’s old town. Found down an iconic alleyway just off the cobbles of Church Street. Built circa 1620 the property comprises four floors and retains the original wood panelling and beams. Whitby old town is full of character with individual shops and a regular market.  Try the Blitz restaurant for Tapas or have an afternoon tea at Marie Antoinette’s.  Take a walk along Henrietta street and see the famous Fortunes kippers being smoked in the old smokehouse and then walk along to the pier and see the fantastic view out to sea. For those who fancy a spot of fossiling, this is the area, and the fossiling beach can be reached from here.

Borough House has many features to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable stay.  There is a beautifully stylish living room and kitchen diner, the whole property is heavily beamed and complemented by stripped wooden floors and mullioned windows.  It is easy to imagine this house in bygone days.  The property abounds with original features such as pine doors and deep skirting boards.  All the rooms are light and airy and have a really cosy feel, just right for relaxing after a day in Whitby.  There are three good sized bedrooms, one with en-suite however please be aware that the top floor twin bedroom leads directly onto the top floor single room.
This is a fantastic property for families and friends, it is spacious with a quirky interior and couldn’t be closer to all that Whitby has to offer.

Ground Floor Entrance:
Front door with restricted head height leads into the hallway with quarry tiled floor and hanging for coats.
Kitchen/Dining room: A large room with a beautiful inglenook fireplace with wood burning stove and two wicker chairs.  A beamed room with a stunning large mullioned window looking up towards the old alleyway and with a glimpse of the cliff behind.  The kitchen has a range cooker with a gas hob, microwave, fridge and tiling which depicts the famous Whitby whalebone on top of west cliff.  The kitchen has a peninsular giving lots of space to prepare a meal for family and friends and as the dining table with seating for 8 is close by, everyone can gather in this sociable room and give a helping hand to the cook.  There are two smaller windows which look over the alleyway and have window seats.  The room is beamed and has high ceilings. Stained glass windows let in the light and extra seating is provided with and old pine settle.
Utility: This has a washer dryer, dishwasher and freezer box.

Stairs lead up to the first floor
A large stripped wooden floored landing with a front facing window giving a view of the historic alleyway so typical of Whitby and no doubt where smugglers once plied their trade.

Living room:  This is a beautifully elegant room with stunning panelling on all the walls.  There are two very large sofas in oatmeal linen and a super high back arm chair with matching oversized footstool, this is the place to relax after a day exploring Whitby and definitely somewhere to put your feet up if you have walked up the 199 steps to the iconic Whitby Abbey!  There is a fireplace, (unused), coffee table and a large smart TV with DVD.  A chest with a good selection of board games and a bookcase with plenty of books will ensure you have plenty to keep you occupied. The mullioned windows with window seat complete the historic ambiance of this gorgeous room.
Bedroom 2: A twin room which faces the front of the property and has a large window with a deep windowsill in old pine.  This room has 2 single beds a bedside cabinet, TV, dressing table and stunning carved dark wood wardrobe.  A feature of this room is the fireplace, no longer used, which is made of exposed brickwork

Stairs to Second Floor
Bathroom: A black and white tiled bathroom incorporating a claw footed bath and pedestal sink unit, there is a beautiful beam which shows all the ravages of time and a stripped wooden floor.  There is a large window letting in lots of light and a pine latched door
Master Bedroom: A large room with a stripped wooden floor, super king-size bed with bedside cabinets, TV, a sink unit in an old antique pine surround, a walk-in wardrobe with pine latched door and a further walk in storage cupboard again with a pine latched door. This room has a most attractive window with a window seat of old wood which beautifully complements the style of this property.  Sit and look over the roof tops and imagine days gone by.
En-suite:  Shower room which is tiled in black and white and has a walk-in shower and toilet.

As you go up the staircase look at the panelling on the turn of the stairs, a really fine example of this period some of the walls are attractively laid to open brickwork.
Bedroom 3: This room has a king size bed and TV.  There is a hanging rail and two chests of drawers, there is a shared bedside table and the light floods in through the skylight.  Two tub chairs provide seating.  This room is heavily beamed with ancient beams from the old ships. There is some limited head height.  There is also some attractive exposed stone and brickwork.
Annexe Bedroom: A small room with a single bed. A chest of drawers provides storage.  There is a small skylight window and the head height is limited.  This room leads out via an old wooden door with a large wooden latch onto the landing and directly into bedroom 3, please note there is no door into bedroom 3.

We had an amazing time at Borough House. A great house in the middle of the old part of town but tucked away from the crowds and noise. We loved being able to step out to the shops and explore without having to use the car. We had great weather and most days would eat our lunches overlooking the harbour - just a stone's throw from the front dooRead morer. The beds are very comfortable with excellent linen and everywhere was incredibly clean and tidy. The rooms are very large - given the position of the house. The bathroom is up some stairs - but not much more than at home. My 86 year old Mum managed ok. We are all a little fitter than we were - which is a good thing! I highly recommend Borough House. Thank you for a great stay - and the wonderful welcome basket! Hide

We loved our stay. Amazing location - literally 2 mins walk from the 199 steps up to the Abbey. But yet very quiet at night time. And very comfortable inside (especially the living room). Would highly recommend.

This property is in an amazing location in Whitby, the house is very spacious, and very well equipped - it oozes the character of an old house. The owner was very generous to ensure our stay was the best it could be, including a lovely welcome pack. We cant wait to return & have already recommended this property to friends.

We had a glorious holiday in a beautiful 16th century cottage in Whitby. Just stunning! I can honestly say the owners went above & beyond to make our stay very special. Everything was just outstanding. We will definitely be booking another holiday in the future.

Borough House is located RIGHT in the centre of Whitby, on the Abbey side. Five steps and you are in the throng of the cobbled streets. The house is beautiful, quirky and very well equipped. It is very quiet at night, lovely and warm and the kitchen is the heart of the house. We were five girls on a walking weekend away and we absolutely loved it. We only used the car once over the weekend so not a problem at all. Hide

I was concerned after reading previous reviews regarding the cleanliness of this property, however, upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised. Fabulous location, clean house, really comfy beds, everything we could want from a holiday let. Hopefully when this property is sold (as its up for sale) it will remain as a holiday let
