Property code: OC-WA240

The Old School House is a cosy two bedroomed cottage which sleeps four in the delightful village of Briggswath, just outside the coastal town of Whitby on the North York Moors.  There is an open plan living/dining and kitchen area, just right for small family to be together after a day in the moors or great for friends to enjoy each other’s company whilst preparing a tasty dinner from local Yorkshire fayre or to sit and relax in front of the large smart TV and watch a favourite film.  Upstairs you will find two comfortable bedrooms, a family bathroom and an en-suite shower cubicle in bedroom one. The property is located within five minutes’ drive of Whitby.  Here you will find a beach complete with donkey rides in the summer and some of the best fossil hunting in the country.  Captain James Cook was an apprentice here in Whitby before he sailed off and discovered Australia. Whitby Abbey, a Cistercian monastery, is said to be the inspiration for Bram Stokers Dracula and the Goth community hold their festival here every year. With, history, art, nature and superb restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs and of course fish and chips there really is something for everyone in Whitby.

History: The Old School House was actually originally a Toll House, the last before Whitby on the Pickering to Whitby road. It was first mentioned in 1764 (We did a little research in the library of the Whitby and Literary Society. Part of the Whitby Museum and well worth a visit) It then became the local School, hence the name. During the war it was used by the Home Guard. Since then it has been a Hairdressers, Antique shop (It popped up several times on Heartbeat) and now for you a holiday cottage.

The house is lovely and a perfect size for us (2 adults, 1 teen & 1 dog). The shower in the main bedroom is brilliant. Great little touches like games, puzzles and cards. The welcome basket was lovely and the house decorated for Easter was a nice surprise. I'm unsure if we'll return to the area but if we did, we would stay here again.
