Situated in Eskdale Green village, this period property was built in a Swiss cottage style by the local Outward Bound founder Kurt Hahn in 1882. The house boasts wonderful features, from stone-flagged floors and feature tiling to typical Eskdale fireplaces. With plenty of great pubs along the way and located opposite the popular Eskdale Stores, this is a superb base for families, walkers, climbers, and nature lovers exploring the fells, pools, and woodlands of the Esk Valley. Here, you can find England’s highest mountain and deepest lake and hop on some great walking trails or jump in Wastwater for a refreshing dip. Find your bearings with a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Valley Ratty Railway – there’s a station less than half a mile away. Steam towards inland fells or choose the sparkling coastline.

Entering this lovely period house, full of original features which have been carefully retained and mixed in with the new additions and modern conveniences. The lounge is the hub of the house with wrap-around seating and armchairs surrounding the wonderful wood burner (first basket of logs provided) and 50” Smart TV. Along the hallway toward the kitchen, there is a further snug with a cosy armchair, love seat and an additional wood burner (first basket of logs included). Enjoy a book from the selection of hundreds available in the floor to ceiling bookshelves in the lounge, perfect for those who want to relax with a good book in front of the fire. The dining room offers great space for a family feast with oak tables and chairs, and lovely tunning glassware for whatever tipple takes your fancy, all housed in the original old post office dating back to 1882. The classic Lake District kitchen is a joy to cook in with a Rangemaster oven, dishwasher and microwave with a vintage butcher's block preparation island in the middle, perfect for family groups. Heading up to the first floor there are two double bedrooms with sumptuous down duvets along with the main bathroom with a large shower and impressive freestanding bath and WC. Finally, on this floor is the master bedroom with a king-size bed, plush down duvet and amazing views of the curated garden and local fells beyond. On the lower ground level, there are two WCs, a washing machine plus storage for bikes and kayaks alike.

Outside, there is an enclosed garden with a towering Victorian monkey puzzle tree and amazing views over this rural landscape. A delightful patio area offers the perfect place to enjoy some al fresco dining along with a summer house and lawned garden area – ideal for your four-legged friends and kids to enjoy. Private parking is on site for up to three cars.

We had a lovely family holiday at the cottage and would highly recommend, the surrounding area was great with easy access to the coast and beautiful walks . Good pubs nearby serving good food at reasonable prices. Cottage was excellent and had all we needed.

We had a great week staying at Moss bank. The house is well-equipped, and comfortable for three adult couples. The property is located above a one bedroom flat (also holiday let). The access from the garden is up stairs to the main living area. Others have commented on hot water, but with 3 couples and being aware we didn't have a problem. Kitchen Read morewell-equipped. The log burner in main living room was out of action. Owners responded promptly when contacted. Shop opposite very accessible. Hide

This is a lovely house - with a great garden. Great spot, with lovely views across the valley. It did need to be cleaned better and some incidentals were not great, but we had a brilliant holiday, so many lovely walks straight from the house.

The location and general scenery is wonderful, the downsides are the lack of cleanliness, the lack of hot water ( I did contact the owners who moved the time slots but I believed the water should be on all day, we were six adults and a young child and water often ran out because water wasn't being heated up all day). The grass was far too long whicRead moreh made finding our dogs parcels difficult, apologies if all not found. A shame, as these issues are all easily resolved. Hide

Lovely house, everything you need, very comfy and owners very helpful. Could have been a bit cleaner as behind beds, bed head boards, skirting boards, doors, draws, wardrobes, lamp shades had not been cleaned in a while very dusty so I actually cleaned it all as my mother in law suffers with asthma and I am ocd clean.

This property has a wonderful garden and we loved sitting having a drink overlooking the fells. Our 3 dogs also enjoyed it. There is plenty of room in the property with the beds being comfortable and enough space for clothes. The library is great. However, the shower is awful with very little water pressure or heat control. Unfortunately, the showeRead morer over the bath doesnt help as that too is poor. Hide

This property is fantastic. Excellently appointed, we wanted for nothing being able to spark up the log fire if needed to and the shower tray outside for washing messy dogs a brilliant idea as well as the washer dryer. Kitchen well equipped, everything you need. Living room great with 50" TV including Netflix/Prime etc not to mention the wall of boRead moreoks and the pile of games. Garden a boon for the four dogs we had. Bower House a short walk away serving good food and beer. 3 loo's, 1 bathroom Hide
