Cottages in Richmond

Richmond lies to the north east corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a gem of a market town tucked away in glorious countryside.

Overlooked by an impressive Norman castle, the town prospered hugely in Georgian times and this is evident in the spacious and historic market square, surrounded by classic architecture of the period. The Georgian Theatre Royal which was built in 1788 is noted as the most complete, original 18th century theatre in the UK.

Richmond is a thriving market town with much to offer and has a vibrant community with an identity embedded in its picturesque location that will give you a real flavour of Yorkshire life.Central to Richmond is the 12th century Richmond Castle which overlooks the River Swale running through the town. The views from the top of the castle across to the Yorkshire Dales are panoramic and the castle is surrounded by the most beautiful gardens. There are a host of lovely eating places around the castle walls.

A circular walk takes you from the Castle alongside the River Swale to Easby Abbey, passing by the old railway station which has now been converted into an art gallery and restaurant; the walk in fact is along the old railway. The views around the Abbey are simply stunning, the Abbey ruins contributing to the unique atmosphere.

A range of eating places, museums, galleries and independent traders mean that there is much to keep you in Richmond and for those who don’t want to venture too far afield, the walks around the river are blissful and very pretty. For those that do, the dramatic vistas of the Dales beckon and it is not for nothing that Richmond has earned the title of Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales.
