Holiday Cottages in Cumbria & The Lake District
Come to this north-west corner of England and you’ll soon realise why it has been awarded World Heritage Status by a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) committee. This means our wonderful National Park has joined the likes of the Great Barrier Reef, Grand Canyon and Egyptian Pyramids on the world-renowned list of World Heritage Sites.
The north-west corner of England has a rugged beauty that has drawn people here for centuries. Dry-stone walls line narrow country lanes, small farmsteads dot the landscape, while all around dramatic hills and mountains rise to dominate the skyline. The Lake District National Park is the big draw in this part of the world, with over two hundred fells and sixteen lakes to feast your eyes upon, but even outside the Park the landscape is scarcely less beautiful. It’s a county ideal for rambling, mountain biking, running, and simply being outdoors, enjoying nature.
But there’s also plenty for those who prefer a more leisurely pace: museums and historic attractions abound, as well as restaurants serving fine food, and local pubs which serve good hearty fare. The small towns and villages in the area, like Elterwater and Chapel Stile, are almost impossibly picturesque, and the coastline on the western edge is suitably dramatic.
The Lake District National Park is the largest National Park in England, and also houses the largest mountain in England, Scafell Pike. The summit is 978 metres above sea level and provides an excellent walking challenge for many. There are several routes to the summit available, with the most popular beginning in Wasdale Head.
