It is under 10 miles by road from the nearest town of Whitby, and approximately 27 miles from both Middlesbrough and Scarborough. The village is typical of those found all across the North York Moors.being mostly built of local stone with pantiled or slate roofs.
Lealholm is on the route of the Esk valley railway line, which runs from Whitby to Middlesbrough, and is served by Lealholm railway station. The Board Inn is the local village inn and the Shepherd's Hall provides meals, teas and a craft shop. There is a famous set of stepping stones in the village which cross the River Esk.

Mrs L,

This is the second time we have visited Fat Ox Cottage. We were again made very welcome by the owners and the cottage is like a home from home with everything available that you need for a comfortable stay. We hope to visit again and thank both the owners and also Original Cottages for a great service and welcome.
