Description

The Old School House is a cosy two bedroomed cottage which sleeps four in the delightful village of Briggswath, just outside the coastal town of Whitby on the North York Moors.  There is an open plan living/dining and kitchen area, just right for small family to be together after a day in the moors or great for friends to enjoy each other’s company whilst preparing a tasty dinner from local Yorkshire fayre or to sit and relax in front of the large smart TV and watch a favourite film.  Upstairs you will find two comfortable bedrooms, a family bathroom and an en-suite shower cubicle in bedroom one. The property is located within five minutes’ drive of Whitby.  Here you will find a beach complete with donkey rides in the summer and some of the best fossil hunting in the country.  Captain James Cook was an apprentice here in Whitby before he sailed off and discovered Australia. Whitby Abbey, a Cistercian monastery, is said to be the inspiration for Bram Stokers Dracula and the Goth community hold their festival here every year. With, history, art, nature and superb restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs and of course fish and chips there really is something for everyone in Whitby.

History: The Old School House was actually originally a Toll House, the last before Whitby on the Pickering to Whitby road. It was first mentioned in 1764 (We did a little research in the library of the Whitby and Literary Society. Part of the Whitby Museum and well worth a visit) It then became the local School, hence the name. During the war it was used by the Home Guard. Since then it has been a Hairdressers, Antique shop (It popped up several times on Heartbeat) and now for you a holiday cottage.

Reviews

Fabulous cottage in a great location, lovely beds and an amazingly hot shower for after a long walk.

Mrs G,

Property was nice and had everything required. Kitchen / dining equipment needed a clean before use. With a few improvements and attention to detail this could be a very nice property.

Mr S,

A really lovely stay thank you. Great location for our fossil hunting jaunts with the kids. Everything we needed and more (even hot water bottles!)

Dr B,

Comfortable and welcoming property.

Mr R,

Great property in terms of location - ideal base for travel to nearby villages and walks. Lovely cottage with home comforts - highly recommend

Mr H,

Had a lovely stay at The Old School House for a long weekend. Highly recommend Eskape Whitby escape rooms and Fish Cottage at Sandsend for an interesting take on fish & chips (takeaway menu). The cottage is beautiful (and warm).

Past Customer,

Thank you for a relaxing break. The cottage had everything you need for a relaxing break - well placed too for walks and views.

Past Customer,

Enjoyed a simple, quick break, leaving the car parked up - took the train to Whitby (enjoyed hearing steam trains pass through Sleights - very "Railway Children"). Cosy cottage, all that we needed to cater for ourselves while recovering from busy lives.

Past Customer,

What a charming cottage! A much looked forward to a stay which we had to reschedule due to heavy snow in March. Glorious Easter sunshine. The welcome pack was a lovely touch.

Past Customer,

We had a lovely stay in this beautiful cottage. The welcome basket was much appreciated. We'd love to come again sometime.

Past Customer,

Really enjoyed our stay, everything you need. Very nice village with Spar shop, butchers and cake shop. Plus 2 pubs, Perry's Garden Centre next door. So close to Whitby.

Past Customer,

The cottage was lovely, the reasons i didn't give a 5 for location is that it is on a fairly busy road on a bend and you have to be careful going in & out of the property with dogs. We didn't use the off road parking space which would have resolved this slight matter because it was a hassle to undo the gates every time and the spot was too tight to get in and out of easily & as said before reversing out onto the main road was an issue. So we parked across the road by the church. Also, the equipment provided was so much stuff in the kitchen that it left no room to put food. We took groceries so we didn't have to do a lot of shopping & planned to cook most nights but there was nowhere to put food other than the fridge or freezer which is no good for dry goods. We looked to empty a cupboard but there was so much stuff in every cupboard that we had to leave all the food on the working top which made the kitchen cramped. These 2 points did not detract from our holiday and we had a super time. There isn't a lot of room for dogs outside, so you have to take them a walk to do their business.
