Description

The Smithy is an intriguing property with a rich history and abundance of charm in the heart of picturesque Lynton. This unique home has been considerately restored to create an eye-catching holiday retreat with many of the original features intact. The substantial open plan lounge, diner, kitchen has the exposed original oak beams and high vaulted ceiling as a reminder of the days of the old forge complemented by contemporary decor. An attractive fireplace with wood burner forms a focal point surrounded by comfy sofas and a roomy dining area sits alongside the well equipped kitchen. There is a minstrel's gallery at the top of the wide wooden stairs, where the iron used to be stored, which has been turned into a unique king size bedroom. A second double room and a single room can also be reached off the landing along with a family bathroom.

Historically, the forge was worked by Bill Prideaux, who was still providing a service at the age of 89, claiming to be the oldest blacksmith in the country. The village of Lynton is in an area known as England’s Little Switzerland. This Victorian village has a lovely selection of shops, tea-rooms and cafes and boasts The Lyn and Exmoor Museum, which is housed in St Vincent’s Cottage. It has some interesting exhibitions of Exmoor life, including information about the local lifeboat and the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway. Both Lynton and Lynmouth owe a great deal to Sir George Newnes, who in 1887 along with Thomas Hewitt, began to lay a 900 foot twin track up the steep gradient between the two villages. The unique water operated funicular cliff railway was opened in 1890 and, apart from needing new track in 1908, operates now as it always has. Head inland for the wonders of Exmoor National Park or west to the fascinating town of Ilfracombe

Reviews

A perfect location, close to pubs, places to eat and walks, a interesting and lovely house with great traditional and modern fixtures and fittings. The old front door looks so great, the high ceilings and then the modern kitchen make for the ideal base.

Mr B,

We had a lovely stay at The Smithy. It is in a great location and a truly unique property. We had a cosy New Year with the log burner on watching the fireworks!

Miss W,

We loved staying in this property! It was very characterful, had everything we needed, and was perfectly located within Lynton. It was very clean and the beds were super comfy. The only negative was it was very cold in the property when we arrived, Noteably, it was one of the coldest days of the year - within a couple of hours with the heating on it was comfortable. Despite this, we would visit again and recommend it to others.

Mrs J,

The Smithy was not only so convenient to everywhere, it was extremely cosy, beautifully quirky, with its little bits of history around. We would have loved to return over the Christmas period but, as we thought it would be, it is already booked up for then. We would certainly go back there.

Mrs T,

Lovely property, great location. Everything you need

Mrs S,

I have stayed at The Smithy a few times and it has never disappointed. I have given a slightly lower score in terms of quality and equipment as the bedding for the single bed was all in double size. This meant that over night the sheet and mattress protector moved across the bed creating huge folds and creases, and the double duvet kept sliding off the bed. The wardrobes, particularly in the smaller bedroom, were a bit shabby and worn with large areas of paint free or bare wood. The vale is on the whole good, but I do think that a non-refundable damage charge of £20 is a bit steep. There’s no reason why the £20 couldn’t be refundable or absorbed in the cost. The Smithy’s black bin isn’t labelled so we used the first empty bin available., but no one seemed to mind.

Ms Helga K,

Thanks we loved the house and the facilities were good. A minor issue that was disappointing, was the lack of consumables eg we were only left 2 rolls of toilet paper which wasn't particularly good quality and no where near enough for 3 adults for 5 nights, 2 dishwasher tablets, no replacement bin bag, and no washing machine detergent. We therefore had to purchase these items. I just feel that if you had been more generous on these minor items, which are relatively cheap, it would complete the positive experience and not cause unnecessary shopping trips and frustration for your visitors.

Ms Nicola M,

Property was gorgeous, we loved our stay and didn't want to leave. The communication ahead of our arrival was really helpful, we had all we needed and more. The property was well equipped for our stay. Would have been useful to have more supplies for a seven night stay: there were less loo rolls, dishwasher tablets, dish cloths and tea towels than we'd expect. But that's fairly minor. Thank you for a brilliant holiday, we'd love to come back!

Mr Jack W,
