A fascinating seaside village built in the 1920s by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie , an architect, barrister, playwright and good friend of J.M.Barrie the author of Peter Pan. The mock Tudor style buildings are now the hallmark of Thorpeness where the amenities include the popular Dolphin Inn with great beers and food , the Thorpeness Hotel with its 18 hole golf course , the Thorpeness Country Club with social facilities, children's club in school holidays and a thriving tennis facility and The Meare - a large shallow boating lake that is a recreation of the Peter Pan story. Close by the Meare are both traditional tea rooms and also a more contemporary Kitchen & Bar establishment housed in the same building as the renowned Thorpeness Emporium. Thorpeness also has "The House in the Clouds" and it's own fully renovated Windmill. The beaches are mainly sandy and behind the village is a myriad of footpaths over heath and common land. Where else might you find the proposition of a lovely, attractive and friendly village bordered on one side by the North Sea and the Meare on the other ? We think it is Unique.  Just a short walk along a seaside footpath will take you to Aldeburgh, home of the Aldeburgh Festival and the Freud Summer Theatre, where there are several excellent restaurants, pubs and lovely shops and fresh fish sold on the beach, as well as a fascinating museum, boating lake, sailing and yacht club

Reviews

Have had many stays with you and have always been happy with the cottages that we have stayed in.So its quite sad that i wasnt really happy with where my family and i stayed this year. When we arrived we were very pleased with the size of the property and where it was.Firstly there was no welcome pack, which was stated in the descripion on the website, and also in one of the reviews that i had read.Luckily i had booked a asda delivery so we were able to have something in.With 5 adults it was nice to have two bathrooms with a shower, but we were unable to use the one upstairs as it was either to hot or to cold to use ,however we tried to get it at a right temperature but it wasent to be,so we just used the bathroom down stairs.I wasent happy with the cleanliness as i found dirty used tissues on the floor of the head of our bed, when we pulled the bed out to pick it up,there was thick dust on the carpet and skirting board, also on the two mirrors in the bedroom ,and the top of wardrobe, and even the picture frames in the bedroom,it was not light dust it was thick fluff dust. This was in the king size bedroom,i didnt check the other two bedrooms. In the lounge we pulled out the foot stool by the fire to reveal 3 dog biscuits and also dog hair.In the kitchen there were no bags to put in the kitchen bin ,it just had the one in which was in it when we arrived,so had to buy some, nothing like foil or clingfilm which is usually in the cottages. The dish washer when it was on didnt get the dishes all clean even on the hottest wash,so had to wash then in the bowl after the cycle had finished, when it had finished the washer wasnt even warm it was cold.,there was only about a inch of washing up liquid in the bottle,i wasnt going out to buy any im affraid,i had already brought dish washer tablets. My son found thick dog hair on the metel door stop in the hall, all of this was why i didnt think the £1300 was worth that much for a cottage that had a lot of negatives. It is such a shame that i have had to mention all of this as ive always been happy with all the places that i have had my holiday in,i feel like a real moaner but needed to mention it all.If it had been the first time i had had cottages with you i wouldnt have booked again,im hopeing i dont have this happen again as ive been coming along time to suffolk and ive always been happy where i have stopped.

Mrs Janette P,

The quality of the property

Mr Peter A,

What a jewel this place is. We were clearly in a place that loves dogs with the facilities and walks nearby. Definitely would return for a longer stay.

Mrs W,

Clean, warm and comfortable cottage with enclosed, secure garden for children/dog.... open fire was a bonus . Close to beach and pleasant walks...welcome basket was much appreciated as contained basics we'd not managed to pick up on way,so were able to enjoy a cup of Suffolk tea before heading to Waitrose in Saxmundham. Would recommend this cottage in Thorpeness if you want a quiet, peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of life.
