4 star

On the border between Northumberland and Cumbria, this ground floor accommodation forms part of the original farmhouse. Approached along a quiet lane, Holmhead is set in a lovely sheltered valley, surrounded by open countryside. The house itself is built directly over the foundations of the Roman Wall and is constructed with stones from the Wall. The ruins of Thirlwall Castle loom above, on the opposite bank of the Tipalt Burn behind the house. There are many delightful riverside walks and the footpath is on the route of the Hadrian's Wall path and Pennine Way. The forts of Vindolanda, Birdoswald ,Housesteads and Chesters are easily reached and The Roman Army Museum is just three quarters of a mile by foot. 18 miles to the west is the city of Carlisle. There is a good selection of shops and the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum are worth a visit. The market town of Hexham is 19 miles east. Haltwhistle 3 miles offers shops, outdoor swimming pool and tennis. Golf 0.5 mile.

Lovely location, on the Hadrian's Wall footpath. Small private garden with a gate straight on to the path. Well supplied with everything we needed and more. Kitchen in particular very well equipped. Very close to lots of interesting places to visit. Owner was helpful. Would recommend you only use the bridge not the Ford!

Mrs L,

Fantastic week's stay at Holmhead. Communications were good (we were delayed a day in arriving) and everything was as described and very comfortable. We particularly appreciated the twin being made into a linked-king bed at short notice. Wonderful location with a babbling burn and Thirlwall castle moments away, and the Hadrian's Wall path adjacent to the garden wall! Note, the nearest supermarket is Sainsburys in Haltwhistle. The Greenhead Hotel is 10 mins walk away, excellent meal and great Twice Brewed beer. Highly recommended for a peaceful get-away that's also perfectly placed to walk and explore.

Ms M,
