Description

Upcott House is an impressive Regency residence built in 1752, which enjoys panoramic views over beautiful countryside towards the Taw Estuary and the hills beyond. It stands proudly in 69 acres of pasture and woodland offering a full range of leisure activities including swimming, snooker and children's play areas. Within this splendid building, Fortescue is a spacious first floor apartment offering wonderful views from the lounge and bedrooms across rolling countryside to the Taw Estuary and out to sea. There is a spacious lounge/diner with an attractive fire place and deep windows as well as a fully equipped kitchen. It has a double bedroom and a twin room with a further bed in the lounge for alternative sleeping arrangements. The Regency manor house offers a fun-packed base from which to explore North Devon. It has been stylishly converted into four apartments and two cottages. They are all managed by the owner, whose family has owned the property since it was built. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious with a wide range of leisure facilities on site including a full-sized snooker table and a 45-ft heated indoor swimming pool.

Nearby Barnstaple is the commercial and agricultural centre of North Devon. It is a charming place that comfortably blends a handsome past with an energetic, present-day buzz. It has a mix of cutting-edge retail outlets, long-established family owned stores and little boutiques. The pannier market hosts local food producers interspersed with dozens of cafes. At weekends, Barnstaple makes wandering the streets a distinct pleasure, with performers and musicians out to entertain. If the weather turns nasty, you’re well provided for in the town. Let’s Go is Barnstaple’s newest family entertainment complex. There’s also a lovely 1930s cinema in town which offers four modern screens showing the latest releases as well as live screenings of major theatre productions

Reviews

We had an excellent stay at Upcott house over summer holidays. We stayed at Fortescue which is an apartment (felt like a house really) on the first floor. We were a family of 4 from Liverpool with kids aged 7 and 5. The main attraction was the swimming pool which the kids enjoyed most days. There is also a games room with a full size snooker table and a playground where we had a few games of cricket. In the evening there is a bar, if you fancied a drink. The owners Mark & Denise live onsite and work tirelessly to make sure the guests have a relaxing stay. Good selection of supermarkets in Barnstaple and the main beaches- Westward Ho, Saunton Sands & Woolacombe beach within half an hour drive. If we lived closer, we would visit every school break!
