Description

This one-bed property is in a lovingly converted farm building on the Iken Barns complex. It offers a simply heavenly bolthole in the Suffolk countryside for two, with stunning views over the River Alde towards Snape. Moments away from the river, where you can enjoy scenic strolls, birdwatching, and a spot of seal-spotting, this is truly a unique location. Why not make Snape Maltings your first foray? It’s just 2 miles to this arts complex with shopping, food and drink too. Or blow the cobwebs away along Aldeburgh’s shingle beach and mooch around the independent shops in this town associated with Benjamin Britten. But bring your boots as there’s lots of opportunity to walk and cycle from here if you can tear yourself away from the cottage!

Feel right at home in this characterful self-catering property, part of a former barn. Downstairs it’s got a really modern feel with a practical open-plan layout, but with charming original features including exposed ceiling timbers. It’s cosy, rustic and smart all at the same time with light wood floors, staircase ascending from here and cosy wood burner. The kitchen has all the kit needed to self-cater in style and you can eat at your table for two. The shower room and WC is on the ground floor too. Upstairs is just the elegant bedroom with antique-style, metal framed bed, built-in storage and those all-important views from the large window right opposite your king size or next to the welcoming armchair. Heavenly!

Guests have the use of a private patio with furniture looking out onto larger, communal gardens. And beyond that there’s the lovely views over the River Alde towards Snape. But with countryside and gorgeous forests all around, there’s no shortage of green space to enjoy.

Iken is a reputed base of Boudica and the marauding Iceni tribes who made good use of the commanding position on the south side of the Alde Estuary. Later, in 869AD, a Viking sailing fleet destroyed the 7th Century monastery at Iken. In the 19th Century sailing barges used the river to trade corn and coal between Snape, London and the east coast ports. Now, you will see the occasional pleasure boat whilst taking in the highly regarded SSSI wildlife habitat and the stunning estuary scenery. Views span from the 7th Century St Butolphs Church, standing on a promontory of higher ground, to the former maltings at Snape which are now vibrant with the sounds of the famous concert hall.

Reviews

The only criticism would be we only had half a toilet roll left and the salt was near empty so we did have drive out on Xmas day to try and fi nd a shop open for those items and tea bags, sugar. The shower really needs a new head or de-scale as it's very low pressure and shoots water at all angles. Toilet seat need tighten also. Really not big issues but I hope you appreciate feedback. Thanks again

Miss L,

Fantastic location and views, comfortable and warm cottage.

Ms S,

Great for a long weekend. Ideally situated, friendly helpful staff. Dog washing point was great! The addition of a dog poo bin would elevate it! Would revisit

Ms M,

Kettle needs descaling Fan Oven not operating correctly Some crockery & cutlery needed washing prior to use Did not meet or see host / manager on site during our stay

Mr Brian T,

Very satisfied

Mr Daphne S,

It was very good accommodation and we could not have asked for more. The surroundings were perfect for what we wanted, plenty of long walks with the dogs and very peaceful. Kate was extremely helpful and always available to help. We will certainly be going back again.

Mrs Kim B,
