Description

Built on the fell-side over 3 levels, Spedding Fold offers superb views across Langdale towards Lingmoor Fell. To coin a famous phrase, you can see the pub from here! (Only a five minute walk through Walthwaite meadow will get you there). The quiet location is within 15 minutes drive of Ambleside & Grasmere, with abundant walks from the door meaning the car can take a break as well. Ample parking in front of the house too.

Spedding Folds owners Geoff and Louise have set up the house to serve all the needs of a large family group. With plenty of space to spread out between the lounge and conservatory with pool/snooker table, two TVs are also available. (Grandparents take note, make one the play room and one the adults room). Now with Wifi so you can easily keep in touch with friends, or work if you have to!

Catering for 10 can be quite a challenge but with the kitchen fitted with 2 ovens and 2 hobs, space for all the food won't be a problem. The dining room with table seating 10 joins both the kitchen and the garden. The fell side garden and patio area are great for kids to run off steam or for eating outside on warm summer evenings.

The bedrooms are spacious and light, with all rooms to the front of the house providing great views of the valley and the rear rooms look out at the garden and fell-side. The top floor family room has an ensuite shower room, the master bedroom on the first floor has a shower room, with large walk in shower, sink and w.c. The first floor also benefits from a newly fitted separate w.c.

On the ground floor, the property has a double garage, which is accessed from the lower hallway and down some steps or from the outside using the up and over garage doors. This houses a full size table tennis table, great for entertaining the children, and with plenty of room for storing bikes, canoes etc. It is not used to park cars. There is room on the driveway for a maximum of 4 cars.

What's included?

We want our holiday cottages to be a 'home for home'. All the beds are made up ready for you, towels are included so no need to bring those, and shower mats are also provided. Two tea towels and a set of oven gloves/oven cloth will be in the kitchen along with a starter pack that includes: washing up liquid, kitchen roll, toilet roll, basic cleaning products, a bin bag in each bin and a few dishwasher tabs. This is just to 'start you off'; you will need to buy your own once these have run out.

Reviews

We as a group have rented this property for many years, and it suits our family arrangements. Good to find that the old fridge-freezer has been replaced at long last, and a new more efficient microwave cooker. The ensuite main bedroom needs new curtains, they were hanging off the rail and the linings are very patchy. We always booked the 'Bonfire Night' week because we enjoyed the fireworks provided in the field opposite Wainwright's pub - provided by the Langdale Estate, however this event has been cancelled sadly and will no longer be a function. We knew that Covid had curtailed many events, but did not expect this one to finish. We like the fact that there are many walks available directly from the property and no need to use the car, unless going further afield. Great pubs in the area, serving good food and a local shop and cafe to cater for the family. It was good to have a new fridge-freezer (after many years of requests) and a new more efficient microwave oven, a new gas boiler too. The thing that lets this property down is the lack of decent curtains in the ensuite bedroom - the present ones hanging off the rail, thin patchy linings and the curtains have been there as long as we have rented the property. There's a lack of small sharp knives in the kitchen - there are plenty of knives but they do not cut well.

Mrs C,

Generally good, with some issues that could be improved, such as the fridge/freezer being too small to cope with a large delivery on arrival day, and some of the beds being a bit on the firm side for elderly hips. The access drive requires a good level of driving skill, especially when having to reverse down it due to the limited space available for turning round. The outside lights, and the strip light in the garage, weren’t working, so the table tennis didn’t get used. We nevertheless had a pleasant and comfortable week despite typical Lakeland weather.

Mr W,

Overall the property was amazing. On arrival we were amazed by the property it was beautiful, the kitchen was very well equipped, the beds were very comfortable, rooms clean. We spent many hours sat in the conservatory just relaxing watching the 'locals' flying and scurrying around (birds and squirrels' not the neighbours! We'd sit out in the garden reading and listening to the river in the background (couldn't see it from the garden). I don't think I've ever been so relaxed on holiday. The property is situation in a beautiful location and is in very close proximity to a shop with lovely cafe and pub (some of the family went to the quiz night). Whilst we did have a few issues that we had to raise but maintenance were swift and the complaint I raised was resolved well. However, this wouldn't stop me from booking again

Mrs Georgina R,

Lovely cottage - wonderful location and view, fabulous living space and three different areas so everyone could find peace if they needed. Will hopefully be back !

Ms H,

Lovely property with excellent space and well equipped. Only quibble is that the garden wasn't enclosed this would be helpful especially as a pet friendly property.

Mrs C,

Good communication from Original Cottages, The cottage was expensive but had plenty of room and was well equipped.

Mr Roland M,

Lovely property in an excellent location.

Mr B,

It was a lovely property and very comfortable. But the first thing that was not mentioned was how steep it is on the drive in the property. Also mainly the hygiene and cleaning was good except for a couple of things. One pan was dirty with something burned inside the bottom. We also found a bra filler under one of the beds and old carrier bags in one of the drawer. Otherwise I thought it was lovely.

Mr David S,

We were a large group and know the area well. This is probably the best-value large property for rent in the Chapel Stile/Elterwater area.

Mr Chris P,

We would have appreciated some warning of the inaccessibility of the cottage by road in winter conditions. Our cars could not manage the hill in ice and snow and we had to leave them at the foot of the hill till the next morning which made arrival extremely difficult. The cottage hire was quite expensive at £2,085 for 6 nights - so not exceptional value for money - but it was warm and comfortable. It would have been even more cosy if we could have had some wood for the open fire available - we would have been happy to pay extra for that. It would also be a good idea to remove the insistence in notices inside on being ready to leave the cottage at 9 am on the final day - very early to get 8 people breakfasted and out - we were ready early and then someone from Original Cottages arrived and said that the cleaners wouldn't be coming until midday. However overall we found the cottage well appointed and the views charming. The teenagers particularly liked the pool and table tennis tables.

Mrs Mary B,
