Description

A pretty and attractive cottage, Appletree Cottage has been lovingly restored by its new owners and offers a little piece of heaven nestling in a quiet corner of north Norfolk’s landscape, situated in Thornage. Originating in the 1850’s and built with a traditional Norfolk brick and flint facade, the interiors are encased in a soft palette of colours that welcome you in from the moment you step through the front door. The highlight of the ground floor is the affable living space to the rear of the cottage. The floor to ceiling windows at the end of the room, lead out to a private and sunny courtyard garden and inside there is a very well equipped kitchen, an additional seating area with sofas and armchairs and a breakfast bar too - a sociable and convivial space to chat to the cook of the day! Both bedrooms upstairs have pretty views of the local surroundings and are decorated with a mix of antique pieces and modernity. Additional touches such as underfloor heating in the shower room and a second TV in the cottage, ensure that all creature comforts are catered for. In a great location for accessing nearby attractions and the ever popular coast, much of which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the cottage is a beautiful retreat to return to time and time again. Thornage is a small village in a tranquil setting lying, as it does, in the Glaven Valley. Country lanes surround the village and if you are of a mind, there are some pretty walks through quiet lanes to some good local pubs, notably The Kings Head in Letheringsett and The Hunny Bell in Hunworth, both approximately 2 miles away. The village is also on the outskirts of the attractive Georgian town of Holt. Full of independent shops, art and antique galleries, coffee culture and more besides, the town also has some great food shops, showcasing the best of Norfolk produce, as well as the newly arrived Eric’s Fish & Chip Shop on the aptly named Fish Hill. You are only 6 miles from the coast and sea and there are some lovely beaches in both directions along the coast; to the east is Cromer with its iconic Pier, beach huts, long sandy sweeps of shoreline and cliff top walks and to the west make sure you visit the beaches at either Wells-next-the-Sea or Holkham. The nearest coastal village to the cottage is Blakeney, which is well worth exploring - it has some great pubs and restaurants, coastal walks across the marshes, an eclectic range of independent shops and a great deli.  Take a steam railway ride along the coast from Holt to Sheringham, visit historic houses at Blickling, Felbrigg, Houghton and of course, Sandringham. Come and bird watch in the winter months and walk the wilder side of the county across the marshes at Cley-next-the-Sea or Stiffkey and marvel at the huge open skies the area is famous for.

Reviews

We had a wonderful week at this beautiful cottage. Tucked away in a small village but only five minutes from Holt, it's the perfect location for a relaxing break The cottage has been thoughtfully extended, stylishly decorated and is beautifully maintained. We spent most of our time in the cottage in the large family area but it was nice to find an excuse to disappear into the sitting room for a quiet read. The White Company bedding was a luxurious bonus!
