Castle Acre is a hidden gem in the lea of 'royal' West Norfolk and the coast. Famed for its 13th Century Cluniac Priory ruins managed by English Heritage, the 12th Century Norman castle ruins and Bailey's Gate, this ancient village, with a traditional pub, is a joy to wander through. From the village it is easy to access both Peddars Way and the Nar Valley Way, both of which offer beautiful countryside on the doorstep. Great houses are nearby with Houghton Hall and the Sandringham Estate just a short drive away and if you fancy a flutter, Fakenham Racecourse has year round meetings. The delights of the Norfolk coast, with the family friendly beaches of Heacham and Hunstanton to the west and the RSPB reserve at Titchwell to the north, intermingle with lovely coastal spots such as Brancaster and Thornham, whilst those keen to shop need look no further than sophisticated Burnham Market. A stay at Castle Acre gives you the best of both worlds in its accessibility and tranquility and will be somewhere to return to time and again.

Reviews

This cottage is beautiful and perfect for our family. The castle ruins, the stream and Wittles cafe are a treat and the easy access to places of interest in Norfolk make it a perfect base.

Mrs O,

It's a beautiful cottage and fell in love the minute I walked in . Will definitely be coming back again ❤️

Miss L,

What a lovely break we've had with Fe and Nick - and a perfect way for Emily to spend her birthday. Fantastic weather for zooming around the lanes in my car with the roof down - all holding on to our hats. Thank you so much

Past Customer,

Sometimes, the art of 'being' is often practised poorly. not on this occasion! many many thanks must go to Julie and Ben for creating a haven for this to happen. It was much needed by Sue and I.

Past Customer,

A lovely little cottage in a sweet little village. Came to Norfolk to see if it is a county for us to move to. We did like it very much. Holt in particular. The Ostrich pub did a big plateful of food, and staff were friendly. Well equipped cottage, very clean. Thank you!

Previous Customer,

Thank you for a lovely stay, we love Castle Acre it was the perfect spot!

Previous Customer,

Castle Acre is such a tranquil place. It is lovely being able to look over at the magnificent church. We had a great day out in Wells Next To The Sea with its dog friendly beaches and cafes. The fish and chips were delicious. We visited Hunstanton which was a nice end to our stay in Norfolk, and we would thoroughly recommend both of the towns. Thank you ever so much for letting us stay in Cockleshells.

Previous Customer,

We absolutely love staying at this beautiful cottage, Castle Acre has so much to offer, from exploring the castle ruins, to walks to the stream, past the Abbey and Priory. The Ostrich and Wittles cafe offer superb food. Can't wait to come back

Mrs Helen O,

All very enjoyable. Well equipped with good heating for the cold snowy days we had. Very clean and comfortable in a cute little village with lots of history.

Mr Jonathan W,

Beautiful cottage, ideal location. Could do with a proper clean, as cobwebs everywhere and had to evict 5 spiders before unpacking. Bathroom needs attention, cracked tiles, badly set up shower/bath, and hot water in the cold tap makes brushing teeth unpleasant. These are all small minor issues that didn’t affect our holiday, everything needed was provided, and was a beautiful warm cottage.

Miss Kriz F,

The warm and inviting welcome that we received when we arrived at Cockleshells was exceptional. The cottage is absolutely beautiful, we amazing views on the church and the village pub. The cottage is well kept, with high level of cleanliness, and fully equipped to feel like a home from home. We were three best girlfriends that stayed there for a weekend of wine and food, and it was bliss. Looking forward to returning!

Dr Sanaz Z,

Your (I assume automated) texts are extremely abrupt. Before leaving I received one saying your check-in as 4pm please arrive after 4 - which at a basic level, doesn't even make sense. While on holiday an early text 8.03AM stating when checkout is. No niceties at all on either text. Cottage lovely, location perfect but your customer service is appalling.
