Romantic breaks should be even more special than your normal holidays. They are times for you as a couple, and are all about shared experiences, creating memories that the two of you will cherish for a lifetime, so the setting must be perfect. With that in mind we’ve chosen some of the most breathtaking places in the UK to take romantic breaks.

Snowdonia. This Welsh National Park has it all. Towering snow-clad mountains, leafy forests and cascading waterfalls are all found within this breathtaking area of Wales. In the summer you can climb to your heart’s content and enjoy the spectacular views from the summits of mountains such as Cadair Idris, take long walks in the sun dappled woods or visit the beautiful coastline. In the colder weather the higher peaks may be off limits at times, but the lower hills take on a shine of their own when covered in frost and snow, and there’s always the option of snuggling by a roaring open fire in a traditional Welsh stone cottage.

Cornwall is such a popular destination for romantic breaks it’s hard to pick just one location to recommend, but we’ve plumped for Polperro. You can wander hand in hand along the narrow winding streets, between the pretty Cornish fishing houses, down to the sheltered bay that has delighted visitors for decades. Watch the sun sink slowly below the horizon before heading to one of the excellent Polperro restaurants for a romantic meal.

The Suffolk wool town of Lavenham regularly vies for the title of most beautiful village in England. Traditional half-timbered houses line the quiet streets, and the church of St Peter and St Paul is often said to be the finest of the East Anglian Wool Towns. What you won’t see in this picturesque village are power-lines; they were all fed underground to preserve the look of Lavenham.

Standing on the Yorkshire coast, Whitby has a dramatic and romantic nature. A pretty fishing town nestled in the protective lee of the towering cliffs, the steep slopes are lined with classic fishermen’s cottages, while on the nearby headland stand the magnificent remains of Whitby Abbey. The gothic splendour of the ruins coupled with amazing views over the coastline makes this one of the most romantic locations in the country, and it’s well worth the early start to watch the sun rise.

Hadrian’s Wall is one of the most important ancient monuments in the British Isles, but a destination for romantic breaks? Well it’s not your flowers and chocolate romance, but if you can understand the stark beauty that can be found in the solitude of this wild piece of moorland then Northumberland and the Scottish Borders is the place for you. Take long romantic walks during the day through flowerclad fields and then at night take advantage of the lack of street lights to spend time together under the starriest sky you’ll have ever seen.

The garden of England is a lovely place to take a romantic break. The fields and fields of fruit and flowers that proliferate in the south-east corner of England are perfect for you to take romantic walks, or you can visit one of the numerous Kentish stately homes and country manors where you can enjoy a more cultivated landscape.
