Christmas markets have been occurring across Europe since the late middle ages, with people celebrating the advent of Christmas with markets in Frankfurt and Munich still celebrating these events with tradition fayre, stalls and entertainment.

We Brits have latched onto this wonderful festive celebration, embracing their traditions, food, drink and unique present options. These markets are a nice alternative to an otherwise mass produced and highly marketed affair and, today we now see nearly all major towns and cities throughout the UK, inviting German stall holders to journey across the channel and sell their goods, giving us our very own slice of an European Christmas.

With our sights set on Suffolk for our Christmas getaway and with mulled wine in hand we thought we would help alleviate the daunting task of present buying and introduce you to a few of our favourite Suffolk Christmas Markets; perfect for unique gifts or just to get you in the christmas spirit.

Winter Wonderland Christmas Fair - Sat 5th and 6th December 2015 in Hollesley

This is superbly organised by the great folk at the Suffolk Punch Trust who work tirelessly to protect this rare breed of working horse and the traditional skills of working with these fine creatures. Their wonderful wonderland fair offers free entry and exciting possibilities to stretch those legs with a christmas walk before the turkey stuffing marathon on Christmas day, or perhaps if you’re not feeling so limber or you’re very young with very short legs, you might prefer a ride on the ‘Tinsel Tractor’. The Winter Wonderland Fair also promises craft stalls and merry mouthfuls of seasonal foods a plenty. Take a look here.

Woodbridge Vintage, Retro, Modern & Makers Market - Sat 12th December 2015

If you’re looking for something a little different, this hearty market is one of a kind offering handmade pieces, vintage clothing and period design furniture. Always expect to find unique and unusual pieces for sale. It’s a great place to find the perfect gift for that vintage loving member of your clan, as well as making the most of the delicious local produce on offer and indulge in yummy winter food and drink. You can see more details here.

Ipswich Christmas Market - Fri 11th to 13th Dec 2015

The Ipswich Christmas Market promises to transform the whole town for three days into a winter wonderland. No winter market would be complete without Santa Claus, and he will present, bringing his merry self to the event, with a Ho! Ho! Ho! If that’s not exciting enough then there is a giant snow globe offering a free photograph if you step inside. The day will be soundtracked by live music from 10am daily to get you into the swing of things. Of course, all the usual market stalls will be present, selling their wares; ideal for picking up those bits and bobs, including Christmassy treats to help you on your way to being Christmas ready. Full details can be seen here.
