At the time of the Norman Conquests the village of Rockland St Mary was split in ownership with half being under the guidance of the Earl of Norfolk and the other half the Abbot of Langley Abbey.  The two townships were eventually joined to become the attractive Broadland village as we know it today with its own small Broad to the east of the village and a good village pub and shop.  The area is set in an attractive low lying valley with the River Yare running through it, ideal for bird watchers and cyclists, whilst the Wherryman's Way accessed from the village, makes a great walking day out.   A holiday based here offers many attractions; the fine City of Norwich is full of cultural attractions, cinema complexes, great shopping and a wide choice of cafes restaurants and pubs.  The RSPB Strumpshaw Fen and the Strumpshaw Hall Steam Museum are just across the River Yare and a day trip to The Broads to explore the inlets and waterways, is easily done from here.  The traditional seaside resort of Great Yarmouth is directly to the east as are the less populated beaches of Caister-on-Sea and Winterton-on-Sea - the east coast beaches are large, sandy and there is space for the whole family to enjoy a day out.  A little further north discover Horsey with its famous wind pump now looked after by the National Trust and from here take a walk to the beach where you will discover the resident seal colony - so who's watching who?

Reviews

We stayed for three nights and had a wonderful time. The cabin was beautiful, and so spacious - even bigger and better than it looks from the photos. It had everything we needed for our stay. Paying more for the hot tub was a bonus and well worth it. It was a great size and we went in it each night under the fairy lights. We would love to come back in the summer. Communication from the host was great, and check in and check out was an easy process. I would highly recommend and we are already looking to come back.

Miss M,

The cottage was warm (under floor heating throughout) and very tastefully decorated. Comfortable, with everything we needed for a weekend. The hot tub was wonderful - a perfect addition for 4 friends relaxing!

Mrs M,

Booking and payment straightforward. The property itself exceeded expectations in every sense. The property owners were very friendly and helpful. Couldn’t fault a thing.

Miss Fiona B,

The property was exactly as described. Pet friendly for our dog. Jenny and Lloyd were very friendly and knowledgable on places to visit and to eat. Equipment and facilities excellent even down to the provision of robes for using the hot tub

Mr H,

We had a wonderful week at the Old Cart Lodge. The owners were lovely and happy to share tips on places to visit and eat out. We received helpful information from them before we arrived which helped us with the our arrival and settling in. We were very impressed with the cottage. It was spacious and comfortable, furnished to a high standard and impeccably clean. There was a welcome pack waiting for us which included a delicious homemade lemon cake. The location of the property was great for access to the Norfolk Broads. The coast was only 30 minutes away and Norwich was easily accessible on the days when the weather wasn't so great. Altogether we had a wonderful week. We'll definitely be returning again and would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family.

Wonderful property, furnished and equipped to a very high standard. Superb welcoming friendly hosts.

Mrs M,

Stunning property, everything needed was included. Hosts went above & beyond providing milk, coffee, tea, sugar and even left cake and chocolates for us to enjoy. Great location, nice for local walks but also close driving distant to get to some bigger locations. Really felt like a home from home - cosy vibe, would stay again and recommend to friends & family.
